Today I was reminded that tomorrow, April 16, is World Semi-Colon day.
Project semi colon was an advocacy and activism started by family suicide survivor, Amy Bleuel, whose father had completed suicide. She started this movement to raise attention on suicide losses and struggles related to mental illness, depression, suicidal ideation, etc.
Sadly, Amy Bleuel also completed suicide but her movement, the impact, lives on.
I meet many people with the semi colon tattoo. And, interestingly, many recognize mine and I never have to explain it or to say a word about it.
I’ve even had some of my college students say to me, “I know what that is!” or “I have one too!”
They get it and appreciate it - the mental health struggles and recognition statement.
Mine is on my middle right finger. It’s very subtle. I wanted it to be, purposely.
As the problem of mental health struggles only becomes more visible (a good thing) and perhaps also simultaneously worsens (devastating) awareness and advocacy like the semi colon project are more important than ever.
